What's the difference between the different ShockWaves™?

ShockWave 3.0

The ShockWave™ v3.0 is our latest refinement of the original ShockWave™. It is typically used in an independent front suspension application. It can also be used in some independent rear suspension applications. The ShockWave™ v3.0 uses a double convoluted airspring bellows to achieve the load capacity required for these installations. The refinements for the ShockWave™ v3.0 are:

  1. The availability of double adjustable shock valving so compression and rebound can be adjusted separately for even better ride quality and handling performance.
  2. The airspring endplates and bead rings are internally screwed together to eliminate the fasteners formally required to join these 2 pieces.
  3. The airspring endplates are 1" smaller in diameter to increase framerail clearance on many after market IFS systems such as TCI and Heidt's front ends.

Recommended Applications:
IFS and/or IRS installations on vehicles weighing 1500-2500 lbs. per axle. NOT recommended for solid axle rear applications... not enough travel, too much load capacity.

ShockWave 9000

ShockWave 7000

The ShockWave™ 9000 series was introduced in 2000 to accommodate the customers who wanted ShockWaves™ for the rear of their vehicle as well as the front. The key difference of the ShockWave™ 9000 is the tapered sleeve airspring bellows. This allows a softer spring rate, longer travel, and a lower load capacity that is more appropriate for a rear installation.

Recommended Applications:
Rear installations on a solid rear axle where rear vehicle weight is 1500-2400 lbs. IRS installations on vehicles weighing 1500 lbs. or less per axle. NOT recommended for IFS installations...not enough load capacity.

The ShockWave™ 7000 series was developed in 2003 to address lighter weight vehicles with confined space for installation. Its 4" diameter allows placement in a smaller space. The softer spring rate and load capacity offer an even better ride for lighter weight vehicles.

Recommended Applications:
Solid rear axle installations on vehicles weighing 1500 lbs. or less on the rear axle. Also as a supplement to a leafspring rear suspension. NOT recommended for IRS or IFS installations...not enough load capacity.

What's the difference between single adjustable and double adjustable ShockWaves™?

All ShockWaves™ have adjustable shock valving to allow tuning of the ride quality and handling performance of your vehicle. With a single adjustable unit, the compression valving is pre-set at the factory and the rebound valving is adjustable to allow fine tuning of the ride quality and handling performance. This is the ShockWave™ that has become the suspension of choice of knowledgeable hotrodders across the country!

With the new double adjustable ShockWave™, there are individual adjustment knobs for rebound and compression valving.  This will allow the customer to independently adjust rebound and compression valving on the ShockWave™ to allow even more control of the ride quality and handling performance.

So which style should you choose? For the typical hotrodder who is simply looking for a great ride at a great price, the single adjustable units will probably be the best choice. If you are building the ultimate performance machine and want that "next step" in ride quality and handling performance... then the double adjustable may be for you!

ShockWave PatentSince its introduction in 1999, the ShockWave™ has proven to be the most significant development in air suspensions... ever!  In June of 2003, two United States patents(pat #6,581,918 and pat #6,607,186) were granted concerning the design and function of the ShockWave™.

What does this mean to you, the customer? It means Air Ride Technologies is the inventor of this technology, not an imitator. It also means that we have, and will continue, to develop and refine new variations of the ShockWave™ to meet your specific needs. In 2000 we introduced the ShockWave™ 9000 to accommodate rear installations. This year we proudly introduce the smaller diameter ShockWave™ 7000 for light weight applications. We have also refined the original ShockWave™ into the "version 3" (ShockWave™ v3.0) to better address tight installation envelopes. As the originator of the ShockWave™ technology, we will continue to make it better in every way possible!
